Myopia Management

Orthokeratology (Ortho-K) is a non-surgical vision correction method that uses specially designed rigid gas permeable (RGP) contact lenses to reshape the cornea temporarily while you sleep. The goal of Ortho-K is to correct refractive errors such as myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism, so that you can see clearly without the need for glasses or contact lenses during the day.

Here's how the Ortho-K process typically works:

1. **Consultation and Evaluation**: The process begins with a comprehensive eye examination to assess your eye health and determine if you are a good candidate for Ortho-K. Your eye care professional will measure the shape and curvature of your corneas and discuss your visual needs and expectations.

2. **Custom Lens Fitting**: If you are deemed a suitable candidate for Ortho-K, your eye care professional will take detailed measurements of your eyes to customize a pair of rigid gas permeable (RGP) contact lenses specifically for your eyes. These lenses are designed to gently reshape the cornea overnight.

3. **Lens Wear and Overnight Reshaping**: You will be instructed to wear the Ortho-K lenses every night while you sleep. The lenses gently apply pressure to the cornea, causing it to temporarily flatten and reshape to correct your refractive error. This process is painless and generally well-tolerated.

4. **Vision Improvement**: As you continue to wear the Ortho-K lenses nightly, you should notice gradual improvements in your vision during the day. Many patients experience significant vision correction within the first few days to weeks of starting Ortho-K, but the full effect may take several weeks to achieve.

5. **Regular Follow-Up Visits**: You will need to schedule follow-up visits with your eye care professional to monitor your progress and ensure the lenses are fitting properly and effectively reshaping your corneas. Adjustments to the lens fit or prescription may be made as needed to optimize your vision correction.

6. **Maintenance and Care**: Proper care and maintenance of your Ortho-K lenses are essential for ensuring their effectiveness and your eye health. You will need to clean and disinfect the lenses daily, following your eye care professional's instructions, and replace them as recommended.

Orthokeratology can be an effective option for individuals who want to reduce their dependence on glasses or daytime contact lenses, particularly for activities like sports or outdoor recreation. However, it's important to note that Ortho-K is not suitable for everyone, and there are risks and potential side effects associated with this treatment, including temporary discomfort, dryness, and changes in vision. It's crucial to discuss your individual needs and concerns with your eye care professional to determine if Ortho-K is the right option for you.
